MPGe calculator
Type any one efficiency figure and the others update. EPA treats 33.7 kWh as one gallon of gasoline.
| MPGe | kWh/100 mi | mi/kWh | Wh/mi |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 | 42.1 | 2.37 | 421 |
| 90 | 37.4 | 2.67 | 374 |
| 100 | 33.7 | 2.97 | 337 |
| 110 | 30.6 | 3.26 | 306 |
| 120 | 28.1 | 3.56 | 281 |
| 130 | 25.9 | 3.86 | 259 |
| 140 | 24.1 | 4.15 | 241 |
The conversions
kWh/100 mi = 3,370 ÷ MPGe. mi/kWh = MPGe ÷ 33.7. Wh/mi = kWh/100 mi × 10. The 33.7 comes from EPA: it is the energy content of a gallon of gasoline expressed in kilowatt-hours.
The EPA label for an EV lists both MPGe and kWh/100 mi. For your electricity bill, kWh/100 mi is the useful one, because it scales directly with cost. The EV range list shows both for every current model, and the EV vs gas calculator turns them into money.
Questions drivers ask
What is MPGe?
Miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent. EPA defines it as the miles a vehicle can travel on an amount of electricity with the same energy as one gallon of gasoline, 33.7 kWh. It lets you compare an EV’s efficiency with a gas car’s MPG.
How do I convert MPGe to kWh per 100 miles?
kWh/100 mi = 3,370 ÷ MPGe. For example, 112 MPGe ≈ 30 kWh/100 mi.
How do I convert miles per kWh?
mi/kWh = 100 ÷ (kWh/100 mi) = MPGe ÷ 33.7. Most EVs manage 2.5–4.5 mi/kWh on the EPA label; your car’s trip computer shows it as mi/kWh or Wh/mi.
Is a higher MPGe always cheaper?
Per mile, yes for the same electricity price. But MPGe says nothing about energy prices: 100 MPGe on 45¢ fast charging can cost more per mile than a 40 mpg hybrid on cheap gas. Use the EV vs gas calculator for cost.
Why does my car show different efficiency from the label?
EPA figures are measured from the wall and include charging losses, while most car displays show energy taken from the battery. Speed, temperature and driving style also shift it.
