What moves the cost

Your electricity rate. It ranges from the low teens of cents per kWh in some states to over 40¢ in Hawaii (see electricity prices by state). An overnight EV rate can halve it.

Where you charge. Supercharging usually costs two to three times as much per kWh as charging at home. Tesla often prices busy sites higher at peak times; the car's map shows the current price.

Wheels and trim. Bigger wheels and performance trims use more energy per mile, so they cost more to drive. The table shows EPA consumption for every trim.

Planning a drive? The Tesla trip planner adds up Supercharger stops and cost for a whole route, and the EV charging cost calculator works for any EV.

Questions drivers ask

How much does it cost to charge a Tesla at home?

At the U.S. average residential price of 18.3¢/kWh (EIA, July 2026), a full charge of a typical Model Y or Model 3 costs roughly $12–$17 including charging losses. Your state rate and time-of-use plan can move that a lot.

How much does Supercharging cost?

Tesla sets Supercharger prices per site and often by time of day, and shows the rate in the car and the Tesla app. Enter what you see in the calculator; the default of $0.45/kWh is a mid-range placeholder, not a quote.

How many kWh does a Tesla battery hold?

Tesla does not publish usable capacities for every trim. We estimate usable energy from the EPA range and EPA consumption (kWh/100 mi, measured at the wall) with a 10% allowance for charging losses. It is close enough for costing a charge.

What does a Tesla cost per mile?

EPA consumption × price. A Model 3 or Model Y using about 25–30 kWh/100 mi costs about 4.5–5.5¢ per mile at the national average home rate.
