Sources & method

EVTripWise (previously ElectricRoute Pro) is a free EV trip planner and set of cost calculators. No accounts, no app. Here is where every number comes from.

Vehicle data

Range (combined, city, highway), consumption in kWh/100 mi, MPGe and 240V charge time for every 2025–2027 model-year EV come from the U.S. EPA / DOE fueleconomy.gov vehicle dataset, processed by a script in our repository. All ranges are EPA estimates. Usable battery size is our estimate (EPA range × kWh/100 mi × 0.9), because EPA does not publish capacity.

Prices

Weather and speed

  • Cold: fueleconomy.gov, Fuel Economy in Cold Weather: at 20°F vs 75°F, EV range can drop about 41% with cabin heat and about 12% without.
  • Heat: AAA Electric Vehicle Range Testing (February 2019): at 95°F, range about 17% lower with A/C, about 4% without.
  • Speed: a drag model (air resistance ∝ speed², ~50% of energy at 65 mph), anchored to EPA highway range, which we treat as roughly 65 mph driving because EPA label values are adjusted using the high-speed US06 cycle (top speed 80 mph). This is our modelling assumption, not an EPA figure.

Charging

Charging levels follow the DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center: Level 1 ≈ 1.9 kW (~5 mi/hour), Level 2 2.9–19.2 kW (~25 mi/hour), DC fast up to 500 kW (~100–200+ miles per 30 minutes). Our DC curve is a typical shape (full power to ~50%, tapering to ~40% of peak at 80% and ~10% at 100%), not a specific car's curve.

Maps, routes and chargers

Routes come from the public OSRM demo router; place search from Photon (komoot); charger locations live from the OpenStreetMap Overpass API; map tiles from OpenStreetMap. All are free and keyless. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL). We don't use the NREL/AFDC station API because it requires an API key, and we don't show live stall availability because networks only expose it through their own accounts.

Tax credits

From IRS.gov clean vehicle credit pages and the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit page, as updated in 2026 after Public Law 119-21.

AI trip coach

The optional trip coach sends your question and the trip numbers on screen to an AI model (OpenAI GPT-6 Luna via Vercel AI Gateway). It is told to stay on EV topics and never invent charger details. Every calculator works without it.
